Soaring food prices have sent many people into their gardens to save money as well as create green space in their homes.
Growing their own produce becomes more and more popular for city-dwellers. Vegetables can be cultivated in pots or beds placed on the terraced roof of houses.
The roof vegetable garden can prevent the terraces from geting heated up, helping in keeping the house cool. Growing vegetables on rooftops is a good means of transforming useless areas into lush, productive gardens.
Tran Thi Huong, Vinh Hai Ward, Nha Trang uses her house terrace for planting vegetables, including onions, garlic, chili, water morning glory, salad greens and dill. She said, "With a salary of VND2.5 million, I am struggling to make ends meet. Growing vegetables for ourselves is a good way to save the hard earned money."
"It does not take a lot of time for the gardening. It also provides a safe food source. We are all very satisfied," she added.
Interest in cultivating fruits and vegetables picks up during economic downturns. Tough economic times can also mean more time to garden.
Trinh Thi Hong (Nguyen Tri Phuong Street, Phuoc Long Ward, Nha Trang City) said, "My family has 8 people. We can save some VND500,000 a month from a small vegetable garden behind my house. We do not have to depend on the market vegetables any more."
Growing their own vegetables can bring great economic benefit to many families. They can have fresh vegetables with is less danger of consuming pesticides and other agrochemicals through the vegetables bought from the market. In addition, a good roof garden enhances the beauty of the house.
