Discovering Marine Resources of The Spratly and Paracel Archipelagos

Along with many other exhibitions, Institute of Oceanography of Nha Trang has opened Marine Resources of The Spratly and Paracel Archipelagos for nine months. Displaying historical document, images, specimens, creatures and many others found in two archipelagos of the Spratly and Paracel, the exhibition really fascinates visitors.

Entering the exhibition, set inside a mountainous tunnel, visitors will contemplate a Spratly map made of coffee beans, 18 sq.m. in area and 600kg in weight, by Me Trang Coffee Joint Stock Company. The map asserted the country’s sovereignty in Spratly Islands and expressed gratitude of the people in the mainland to soldiers who are protecting the country’s island.

The exhibition is arranged according to themes. Right at the tunnel entrance is specimen of a big clam, 1 meters in length and 145 kilograms in weight, collected in Spratly waters in April 4, 1991. Next, aquariums will bring visitors to a colorful waterworld. Visitors also have a chance to see biological and geological specimens.

Especially, the exhibition has a lot of document, newspapers, photos, maps, surveys and measurement that confirm the country’s sovereign in two archipelagos of the Spratly and Paracel.

Mokretcova Nina, a Russian tourist said, “I have known about Spratly and Paracel via media. When visiting this exhibition area, I learn more about resources as well as their sovereign.”

“The Marine Resources of The Spratly and Paracel Archipelagos not only is an interesting destination for tourists but also raise the public’s awareness of economic values, sea and island resources, ecological environment, security and sovereign of the two archipelagos”, said Bui Quang Nghi, an official of Institute of Oceanography of Nha Trang.
