Basket-weaving craft villages in Cam Lam District have thrived again.

In recent two years, basket-weaving craft villages in Cam Lam District have thrived thanks to bumper seafood yield. Bamboo basket production has expanded from Tan Sinh Tay Village, Cam Thanh Bac, to many other communities.

In 2009 due to fish catch loss, the demand for bamboo baskets used for containing seafood decreased significantly. The thing has changed these days and the craft villagers are busy with making bamboo baskets.

Nguyen Thanh Liem, an owner of a basket establishment in Tan Sinh Tay Village, Cam Thanh Bac, can earn VND300,000/ day.

His employee named Nguyen Minh Trung (Tan Sinh Tay) has an income of VND200,000/day. He says he and his wife can earn up to VND12 million when there is a high market demand for bamboo baskets.

Truong Cong Tan, a poor household in Tan Sinh Dong, Cam Thanh Bac says with materials bought in Khanh Son District, he and his wife can get an income of VND100,000-120,000VND/day/ person on average.

If the demand for bamboo baskets is stable, basket knitters are likely to earn enough for their living.

Nguyen Thi Minh, an owner of a basket establishment in Quang Duc, Cam Hiep Nam, says she sells over 1,200 baskets of all kinds a day for VND40,000/ small size, VND42,000-45,000/ medium size and VND60,000-70,000/ large size.

Due to relatively high income, basket-weaving craft has expanded from Tan Sinh Tay to the communes of cam Thanh Bac, Cam Hiep Nam, Cam Hiep Bac, Cam An Nam, Cam An Bac, etc.

The baskets are sold mostly to fishing villages between Quang Ngai and Ninh Thuan. The job has created jobs and raised farmers’ income.
