Under the agreement of the Prime Minister, Khanh Hoa Province People’s Committee has licensed Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. to Oshima Shipbuilding Factory at Cam Thinh Dong Commune, Cam Ranh City. This is a significant project of the province as well as the city in the marine economy developing program, aiming to make Cam Ranh to become an industrial urban area in the Southern province. It’s also an big opportunity for ship building industry of the province to develop more strongly.
The Japanese company is a joint venture of Sumitomo Corporation, Sumitomo Heavy Industries and Daizo Corporation. Oshima Shipbuilding is the only shipbuilding company in the world that specializes in the fabricatio.
The factory is planned to cover 304 hectares, including 144 hectares of land and 160 hectares of water. It is estimated to cost VND3,780 billion, equivalent to USD180 million. This foreign invested project will last 50 years. In the period of 2012 – 2013, its ground clearance will be finished. Infrastructure building and human training will be done in the period of 2013 – 2015. The factory is expected to start operation in 2016.

Along with the factory, Oshima Shipbuilding Co., Ltd. committed to call upon Japanese businesses to invest subsidiary industries for ship building here. Additionally, the company pledged to transfer some modern technologies to other ship building factories in Vietnam.
Oshima Shipbuilding Factory is planned to finish 30 vessels, including twelve 56,000 DWT ones and eighteen 38,000 DWT ones.
The factory also will create 1,500 jobs in the first phase and 3,000 ones for the following phase.
It is expected to deliver the State budget nearly USD1 million from land and water rent and USD2.4 million from corporate income tax each year.
The factory also will be an opportunity for Cam Ranh’s people to develop some services, creating more jobs and raise income for them.
Khanh Hoa Province currently has 3 ship building firms, including Hyundai Vinashin Shipyard Co., Ltd., Nha Trang Ship Building Factory and Cam Ranh Ship Building Factory. Each year, they builds tens of vessels, earning about USD350 million in turnover and delivering thousands of VND billion to the State budget. When Oshima Shipbuilding Factory goes into operation, Khanh Hoa Province may become the biggest ship industry center in Vietnam.
