Moon cake market is booming in Nha Trang City. Common cakes seem to be overwhelmed by high-grade ones.
High-grade moon sell well. The cake capacity increases by 58% and the purchasing power by 50%.
Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company is among successful moon cake manufacturers.
Bui Thi Hanh, Deputy General Director of Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company says the company has expanded to new markets at home and abroad (China, Laos and Cambodia).
The company has about 700 outlets and distributors at home. Sanest moon cakes in elegant designs have gradually won domestic customers.
Besides, new Sanest products, including baked cakes with lotus seeds, are available for sale at reasonable prices. Le Minh Lam, Food Section at Sheraton Nha Trang Hotel says most moon cakes are given as gifts so beautiful designs draw customers.
Reportedly, other high-quality moon cake producers have also fulfilled and exceeded their targets although the cakes are not cheap, ranging between VND500,00 and VND2.2 million/box.
This year sees a sharp decrease in the sales of common or plain cakes.
Dang Van Tuan, the owner of a moon cake shop on 2-4 Street, Nha Trang City says the sales decrease by 30% compared with last year. Because of economic hardship, many enterprises have chosen boxes of 2 cakes instead of 4 as usual as gifts for employees.
Mrs. Nguyen Thi Thoa, the owner of a moon cake shop on Phan Boi Chau Shop says common or plain cakes which cost VND55,000-VND200,000 sell slowly. Many customers are still waiting for last-minute bargains.
"I buy high-quality moon cakes as gifts for my business partners. The cake price increases by 10-15%," Pham Ngoc Tu in Vinh Ngoc, Nha Trang City says.
Counterfeit or mislabeled products are found in boxes of reputable brands, including Kinh Do and Dong Khanh. Counterfeit cakes are usually of poor quality.
Customers are advised to inspect the packaging carefully because fake products often have some incorrect information without production and expiry dates. Beware of packaging with substandard printing or running colors, or packages that appear to have been opened.
