Efforts to reduce poverty in Khanh Hoa

Khanh Hoa Province in two years of 2011 and 2012 developed many policies timely to reduce the poverty in the whole province.

Under sustainable poverty reducing measures in the National Target Program of Poverty Reduction and Related Policies, in two years of 2011 and 2012, Khanh Hoa Province has cut by 9,762 poor household. The rate of poor households dropped from 9.4% in 2010 to 7.44% in 2011 and 5.56% in 2012. Some main poverty reducing measures are implementing policies and projects to facilitate poor people to develop production and raise income, opening vocational training classes, offering preferential credits, building sustainable poverty reducing models, etc.

Accordingly, 237 vocational training classes were opened for 7,370 poor people with a total expenditure of more than VND11 billion. 75% of the trainees have found jobs then.

Under housing policies of Decision 167, 1,180 houses were built for poor people with a total support of VND27 billion.

Additionally, 35,230 households also were given remission of power charge.

1.927 poor households were given loans worth VND9 billion in total. The borrowers used loans properly and effectively, which decreased the number of poor households rapidly.


 

The provincial authority assigned 188 organs and businesses to join forces to eliminate hunger and reduce poverty for ethnic people in 32 communes in many different ways.

Policies of supporting health insurance cards for poor people also were made broadly. In 2 years, the province spend VND140 billion on buying health insurance cards for 163,000 poor people, 26,300 ethnic people and 164, 600 near-poor households. 20,100 pupils were remitted school fees and 196,240 were supported study expenditure. 8,550 ethnic pupils were granted scholarship worth more than VND26 billion in total. Bank for Social Policies – Khanh Hoa Province lent VND239 billion to 14,700 poor households to invest children’s study.

Khanh Hoa Province strives to reduce the rate of poor households to under 3% by end 2015. To reach the target, beside supports, the province encourages poor people to rise actively to escape poverty.
