In Cam Thanh Bac Commune, Cam Lam District, Khanh Hoa Province, Vu Dinh Duyen, known as a wounded soldier making rich from empty hands, is a good example to the locals.
Vu Dinh Duyen, 70, and his wife named Nguyen Thi Thanh Tinh devoted their youth to the cause of protecting the country. After the war, returning the normal life, they are very poor. Granted a ground of 5,000 square meters in Cam Thanh Bac but then they could build only a tent to live. Duyen confided, “At that time, we were so poor that we had to eat manioc and sweet-potato instead of rice. We tried to overcome difficulties and rise.”
The burden got heavier when their four children were born one after another.
For 22 years from 1976 to 1998, beside working as a Party Committee Secretary of communes, Duyen and his wife did planting and breeding hard. They began with raising 5 cows, 4 pigs, some chickens and then planting sweet potato, papaya, mango and so one. Their farm has been formed gradually.
After working hard for many years, they saved a sum of money to expand the farm’s scale. The number of cattle heads rose more and more.
Moreover, in 1999, when the children grew up, he learned to raise white-leg shrimps in Cam Hai Tay. From a capital of VND1.4 billion, he hired a pond and released breeders. Raising shrimps earned their family VND300 million – VND400 million each year. Three years later, he along with his sons went to two provinces Ben Tre and Ninh Thuan to establish an aquaculture company, creating stable jobs for more than 50 laborers. Up to now, their family owns tens of billion VND.

Duyen confide, “To me, doing business is not only to earn money but to confirm that a soldier never accepts poverty.”
In addition, all his children succeeded in life. Two of them are fishery engineers, managing the family’s aquaculture companies, one is lecturers of Saigon Technology University and the other is deputy director of an electronic company in Ho Chi Minh City.
Not only good in business, the wounded soldiers are adored by the locals by his benevolence and friendliness.
