Corn is a long-standing crop plant in Khanh Son District, Khanh Hoa Province. Recently, a cross-bred corn variety with better features has been experimented in the district and made a satisfactory result.

Project “Setting up a model to develop LVN61 drought-resistant cross-bred corn plants in Khanh Son District” has been carried out from January, 2013 to December, 2014. It’s a part of the program “Supporting applications and transferring scientific advances and technologies for socioeconomic development in mountainous and rural areas in the period of 2011 – 2015”, transferred by the Agricultural Science and Technology Institue in the Southern Central Coast and presided over by Agricultural and Rural Development Bureau of Khanh Son District.

Despite being in the early time, the new corn variety has made good development with productivity estimated to increase by 20% - 30% in comparison with the traditional kind. During the summer crop 2013, the project has developed three models, including “Developing LVN61 drought-resistant cross-bred corn plants suitable with poor conditions of ethnic minority people”, “Drought-resistant cross-bred corn plant intensive farming” and “Intensive farming of drought-resistant cross-bred corn plants and beans” with the participation of 19 households with 15 hectares in area. Joining the project, the farmers not only received the new variety but were giving instructions on technological application into production.

LVN61 is a Vietnamese corn variety, cheaper than imported ones and more drought-resistant. Being in a right density along with reasonable fertilization and pestilent insect prevention, all of the three experimented models have been grown well. The model “Intensive farming of drought-resistant cross-bred corn plants and beans” also has bettered soil.

Engineer Pham Thi Thai Hien from Agricultural and Rural Development Bureau of Khanh Son District, writer of the project said, “This is the first time drought-resistant cross-bred corn plants have been experimented in Khanh Son District but they sees good suits with the soil here. The project aims to change the farmers’ intensive farming customs which are often thick, easy to get pestilent insects and low in productivity. It can be seen that the new corn plant are growing up well and give good productivity as well as quality.”
