Prices of some commodities in markets have started rising when the Lunar New Year Festival (Tet) is coming near.
According to the Khanh Hoa Provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the province has over 90,000 heads of cattle, 121,500 pigs and 2.5 million domestic fowls. The figures along with the number from other provinces can ensure the demand during the Lunar New Year Festival. However, the sharp rises in pig export to China and pork consumption to produce processed foodstuff for Tet have put up meat price by 5% over last month. Specifically, lean pork now costs VND95,000/kg, beef: VND240,000/kg and chicken: VND100,000/kg.
Vegetable also has seen 10 – 30% increase for several weeks. Specifically, malabar nightshade is selling at VND6,000/bunch, salad greens at VND40,000/kg, cucumber at VND20,000/kg while blue dragons are priced at VND40,000/kg; sugar-apples and grapefruits at VND50,000/kg.
Dried foodstuff has increased by 5% - 10% in price. Garlic has risen to VND120,000/kg; cat’s ear at VND110,000/kg; dried shrimps: VND450,000 – VND700,000/kg; candied ginger: VND85,000/kg; candied lotus seeds: VND130,000/kg; watermelon seeds: VND90,000/kg; squash seeds: VND160,000/kg.
In addition, some food stores have begun to raise their prices. For example, bread with meat has risen from VND10,000/load to VND12,000/load; noodle soup with beef has gone up from VND20,000/bowl to VND22,000/bowl.
At price stabilizing spots such as Maximark and Coopmart, prices are kept stably because they have stored a big amount of goods. To fresh goods such as vegetable, fruits and meat, the supermarkets have made orders with suppliers to ensure quantity, quality as well as prices. These places have started seeing rising purchases.
The supermarket will prolong sale time during the days near Tet. Specifically, Co.opmart Nha Trang will open from 6am to 12pm from the 27th to the 29th of the last lunar month, falling on February 27 -29, close at 12am on February 30 and open again on the fourth of the lunar New Year (February 3). Meanwhile, Metro Cash & Carry Nha Trang will open from 5am to 11pm during 15 days before Tet.
