Food prices are rising due to many reasons, including the hot weather, little supply and increase of transport cost.

In markets, vegetable prices have increased sharply. For example, Vietnamese spinach has risen from VND6,000 to VND8,000/bundle; squash: VND15,000 kg; cucumber: VND20,000/kg; salad: VND30,000/kg. According to a vegetable seller at Xom Moi Market, named Tran Bich Thuy, because of the scorching hot weather, vegetable grows slowly but is easy to go withered; so, its price has to be put up. In addition, spices such as dried onion, dried garlic, turmeric and ginger also have gone up by 5% in price in end crop.

Kinds of refreshing fruits also have soared in price. Thick-skinned orange has risen to VND50,000/kg; lemon: VND30,000/kg; watermelon; VND15,000/kg. Mango price particularly falls by 30% - 50% in a ripening riot. “Fruits sell well these days as the demand rises highly in the hot season. Another reason accounting for the increase in fruit price is the rise in transport cost when the authorities made strict control on loading capacity of vehicles’, said a fruit seller in Vinh Hai Market, named Mai Thi Tam.

Meat of kinds also has gone up by VND5,000/kg. Lean pork now is selling at VND100,000/kg; fat and lean pork: VND90,000/kg; beef shank: VND205,000/kg; garden chicken: VND85,000 – VND90,000/kg. Eggs have risen by VND200 – VND300 each to VND18,000/ten chicken eggs and 26,00/ten duck eggs.

Crab and shrimp have seen 5% - 10% increase. For example, field crab has gone up to VND120,000 – VND130,000/kg from VND80,000 – VND100,000/kg.

According to the provincial Statistics Administration, Khanh Hoa CPI in May increased by 0.22% over that in April. The figure is forecast to rise more in June when summer tourism season comes.
