Raising green crabs together with sugpo prawns and white-leg shrimps under the form of extensive farming is an effective way in Cam Hoa Commune, Cam Lam District, Khanh Hoa Province.

Contrary to the plight 4 – 5 years ago, the area of ponds in Van Tu Dong Hamlet and Van Tu Tay Hamlet, Cam Hoa Commune now has become busy again. Getting good interest from raising green crabs together with sugpo prawns and white-leg shrimps, many raisers have backed to aquaculture.

According to a raiser named Tran Thanh Trung, ponds in Van Tu, which specialize in raising shrimps, have water and soil suitable for crabs. To raise crabs together with shrimps, this farmer bred crabs in water first and bred shrimps 35 – 40 days later. Their raising time is about 4 – 5 months. Crabs can be harvested when reaching about 3 kilograms each in weight and shrimps will be harvested later. “Raising crabs together with shrimps helps the pond’s environment better as well as reduces diseases and cost. The past two crops have given me a profit of more than VND100 million”, Trung revealed.

Phan Thi Tuyet Xuan, another farmer raising crabs together with white-leg shrimps under the form of extensive farming, shared, “Raising crabs together with white-leg shrimps doesn’t need much investment. In the crop of 2013, with nearly VND100 million to invest to raise 3,000 green crabs together with 180,000 white-leg shrimps. After 5 months, we earned VND270 million from white-leg shrimps and VND60 million from green crabs. This crop, we have bred 4,000 green crabs and 150,000 white-leg shrimps. For three months, they have grown well.”

According to aquaculture farmers in the pond area Cuu Loi, this area formerly specialized in raising shrimps. However, many raisers suffered lose because shrimps often got diseased. During the past three years, most of the raisers have changed to raise crabs together with white-leg shrimps. Initially, crab breeders were natural, so their products are not of equal size. Now, raisers buy crab breeders from breeding farms, therefore the crabs are of equal size, healthy and fast-growing.

According to Tran Vy Long, Chairman of Cam Hoa Commune Farmers’ Association, the commune now has 20 hectares of ponds raising crabs together with sugpo prawns and white-leg shrimps under the form of extensive farming. The success of this farming has brought many raisers back to aquaculture. In the time to come, more 100 hectares of ponds Van Tu also follow this way.
