In recent days, fishermen in Khanh Hoa Province and neighboring provinces have a bumper crop of anchovies. Current anchovy prices remain high and stable, earning boat owners tens of million VND after each sea-going voyage.
At Da Bac Fishing Port, Cam Ranh City, these days, many boats land with tons of anchovies every morning. Then, the anchovies are moved to refrigerated vans and sold in many places in the province. A part of them are consumed at markets and others are sold for fish sauce producers. The kind of fish is selling at VND12,000 – VND15,000/kg at Da Bac Fishing Port.

Similarly, Vinh Luong Fishing Port, Nha Trang is busy with a lot of boats of the province and others such as Binh Dinh and Phu Yen carrying tons of anchovies. According to Le The Hai, Head of Vinh Luong Fishing Port’s management board, the port are sometimes so overloaded that many boat owners have to look for other ports to moor for in time sale. Big anchovies now are selling at VND25,000/kg at present.
Fisherman Le Thanh Tam, from Hoa Hiep Nam Commune, Dong Hoa District, Phu Yen Province happily said, “These days, my boat has caught about 5 tons of anchovies each night. The figure sometimes rises to 10 tons. Each sea-going voyage, one day and night, earns me VND10 – 15 million after deducting expenses.”
According to the fishermen’s experience, anchovy harvest usually lasts from July to the end of the year. In comparison with last year, the anchovy crop has come one month later but the yield is higher. Fishing boats often put out to sea in the afternoon, do fishing during the night and return on the morning of the next day.
Also this time, many boats have a good crop of hairtails. Small hairtails are selling about VND20,000/kg and bigger ones are from VND70,000 – VND80,000/kg.
