From a hobby, orchid planting has become an industry giving good income to Tran Thanh Son’s family in Phu Trung Hamlet, Vinh Thanh Commune, Nha Trang City. With self-contained production from sapling engrafting to basket making, the orchid garden is a place many people have visited and learn experience.
Keen on flowers and ornamental plants, in end 1990s, Son and his wife, Hanh, traveled to Da Lat to study about growing and trading them. Then, they returned hometown to start career. With a starting capital of VND20 million, they bought 1,000 seed plants and grew them. However, due to the unsuitable care, most of the seed plants died. Not discouraged, Son studied patiently to master the way to grow orchids in Nha Trang climate. Also, he has researched grafting to work out many strange colors for orchids. Up to now, their garden has 10,000 pots of orchids with 15 kinds, supplying for inside and outside the province.

In addition, they themselves can make pretty baskets for orchids, creating a self-contained process. Beside for the orchids in their garden, they sell over 500 baskets to Hanoi, Da Nang and Ho Chi Minh City each month.
The orchid garden has brought them a good income of over VND100 million/year and created stable jobs for 10 local laborers. A basket of orchids in Son’s garden is selling from VND40,000 – VND200,000. Some special ones may cost millions of VND.
According to Chairwoman of Vinh Thanh Commune Farmers’ Association Nguyen Thi Tang, self-contained orchid production of Son’s family is a new economic model in the commune. The association often sends farmers to the garden to study experience.
