In recent years, many farmers in Van Thang Commune, Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa Province have applied scientific technologies in raising cows for reproduction, bringing about high economic efficiency.

From a poor household, Truong Ban’s family in Suoi Luong Hamlet, Van Thang Commune has become better off thanks to raising reproductive cows. Each year, his family earns several ten million VND from selling cows and calves. Sharing experience to raise cows successfully, he said that raising cows for reproduction is not much different from cows for meat production, but raisers have to note the insemination time of cows to reproduce best calves. In addition, food for cows has to be ensured. The farmer has grown 1,000 sq.m. of elephant grass in his garden to supply food for 7 cows. He has also enhanced his knowledge in raising cows by reading books and newspapers as well as attending training courses.

According to Chairman of Van Thang Commune Farmers’ Association Truong Van Long, cows for reproduction are being chosen by many farmers in the commune because they are easy and rather safe to raise and cost for their food is low. The commune features a flat terrain with many pastures, favorable for breeding. Moreover, in recent years, cow price keeps high, which encourages the farmers to raise cows. Therefore, the number of households raising cows in the whole commune has risen to 120.

In April, 2014, Van Ninh District Farmers’ Association set up a reproductive cow raising group in Van Thang Commune with 15 members. Each members were offered a loan of VND30 million – VND40 million to purchase breeders. All members of the group were trained in breeding technologies, inoculation against epidemics, ways to choose breeders, build farm, etc. Veterinary staff of the commune also often come to farms to support raisers. Consequently, cows raised by the group’s member have grown well.

“Since 2011, raising cows for meat production in Van Ninh District has developed strongly, putting up the demand for reproductive cows. As a result, the model of raising cows for reproduction is a opportune heading, bringing high income for the commune’s farmers”, confirmed Pham Tam, vice-chairman of Van Ninh District Farmers’ Association.
