The red drum (Sciaenops ocellatus) has been raised popularly in some Northern provinces but still been new in Khanh Hoa Province. A provincial-level research project for transferring artificial production technologies of red drum breeders has started recently, aiming to develop a new kind of fish to raise in the province.

According to the project chief – Master Ngo Van Manh from Aquaculture Institute of Nha Trang University, red drum not only is fast-growing, easy-breeding but also has high economic value. The fish raised experimentally in Vung Ngan, Nha Trang have grown well. After 10 months raised by industrial food, young fish, 6-7 cm long, have become mature, weighing 1.3 kilogram – 2.2 kilogram. Their survival rate is about 72%. The fish are selling at VND100,000 – VND200,000/kg.

Actually, red drum has been raised successfully in some Northern provinces such as Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Nam Dinh and Ha Tinh. Basing achievements in producing red drum breeders in these provinces and many countries in the world, the Aquaculture Institute of Nha Trang University has carried out a experimental raising successfully in Khanh Hoa’ climate. Up to now, the flock of 84 parent fish, weighing 4 – 5kg each, have been able to reproduce. The research group is also raising 80,000 larval fish and breeding fish at a fish farm in Vinh Hoa Ward, Nha Trang. The fish will be handed over to raisers when growing up to 6 – 8cm.

The project of transferring artificial production technologies of red drum breeders, to be conducted in two years from 2014 to 2016, costs about VND900 million. After setting up a model of producing red drum breeders, it aims to transfer the technologies to 6 fish farms in the province.

Sea fish farms in the province now mainly produce breeders of barramundies, black king fish and pompanos. None of them have breeding red drums. The development of producing breeding red drums with good quality and on a large scale will partly diversify kinds of fish raised in the province.
