With average interest of VND1 billion/year from growing Australian mangoes, Ngo Trong is considered as a good farmer in Bai Gieng 2 Hamlet, Cam Hai Tay Commune, Cam Lam District, Khanh Hoa Province.

 

Ngo Trong used to be a soldier. From 1981, he worked in a company in Nha Trang and his family was rather poor at that time. Since he retired, he has done cultivating on his family’s orchard.

 

Ngo Trong started growing Australian mangoes in 2007 by transferring 30% of 700 mango trees of two kinds Bo and Hoa Loc into Australian mango trees. The initial number of Australian mango trees earned him VND300 million/year. Then, he changed all his 12 hectares of his orchard into Australian mangoes. Learning experience from other farmers and books as well as newspapers, he invested watering system and hired more labor to take care of the Australian mango orchard. His mango orchard has developed well, giving big and tasty mangoes. In 2014, after deducting costs, the Australian mangoes earned his family more than VND1 billion. He foresees that the profit may double in 1 – 2 years when later transplanted Australian mango trees are harvested.

The Australian mango orchard has brought a better life for the farmer’s family. It also creates frequent jobs for about 10 local laborers with monthly average of VND4 million/person.

 

He revealed that Australian mango trees are easy to care and rarely pestilent. They only need to be watered and pruned. Moreover, price of Australian mangoes is high. It costs VND35,000 – VND40,000/kg normally and may rise to VND80,000 – VND100,000/kg on lunar New Year occasions.

 

Chairman of Cam Hai Tay Commune Nguyen Duong praised Ngo Trong as an active and enterprising farmer. His household owns the biggest area of mangoes in the commune. He is a good example for other farmers in the commune.

 

In a recent visit to Khanh Hoa Province, Politburo member Ngo Van Du, who is also Party Central Committee Secretary and Head of the Party Commission for Inspection, also highly appreciated Ngo Trong’s model of growing mangoes.
