Planning is one of significant measures to develop salangane raising in Vietnam in sustainable orientation.
Potentials in the Southern Central region
According to a survey carried out the Khanh Hoa Salangane Nest Company, the whole country has 237 salangane island caves, including 219 in the Southern Central region. Khanh Hoa Province, in particularly, features 169 caves. To salanganes raised in houses, there are 2,614 swiflet houses, mainly in the Southern Central region (27.9%), the Eastern South region (32.7%) and the Western South region (36.8%).
According to Master Le Huu Hoang, General Director of Khanh Hoa Salanganes Nest Company, natural conditions in the Southern Central province and the Highlands have potentials for raising salanganes on islands as well as in houses. The regions own most of the salangane caves and 1/3 of the salangane houses nationwide. The development of salangane population in the Southern Central province and the Highlands has significance for the economy, creating jobs as well as products for export, and raising revenue for the local budget.
However, having no orientation and planning, raising salanganes now is in a spontaneous growth. Making good planning is an effective measure for raising salanganes sustainbly. Planning areas of raising salanganes need to be made comprehensively and promptly in 2015 in order to build the strategy to develop salangane raising for the period of 2015 – 2020 and vision till 2030.
Some measures to develop raising salanganes
Up to now, only some provinces, including Khanh Hoa, Phu Yen, Ninh Thuan, Tra Vinh have carried out planning for the development of salangane areas. In Khanh Hoa Province, the provincial People’s Committee has adopted a planning project of developing and managing salangane caves and islands in the province till 2020. At present, Khanh Hoa Salanganes Nest Company is managing and exploiting 32 islands with 169 salangane caves. As planned, the company will develop more 63 bird islands and caves in the province. Potential areas given priority to develop salangane raising are suburbs of Nha Trang City and Cam Ranh City, Van Ninh District, Dien Khanh District, Cam Lam District and Ninh Hoa Town.
Other potential areas in the region are Hoa Vang District (Da Nang Province), Dien Ban, Thang Binh, Duy Xuyen (Quang Nam Province), Tu Nghia, Duc Pho (Quang Ngai Province), An Nhon, Tuy Phuoc (Binh Dinh Province), Tuy Hoa City’s suburb, Dong Hoa, Phu Hoa (Phu Yen Province), the south and the north of Dinh Bridge, Phan Rang City’ suburb, Ninh Phuoc, Ninh Hai (Binh Thuan Province); Ham Thuan Bac, Ham Thuan Nam, Bac Binh, Phan Thiet City’s suburb (Binh Thuan Province). On the Highlands, planed areas are at the height of under 550 meters.
Beside the measure of planning, Master Le Huu Hoang has suggested some other measures such as policies, science – technology, environment improvement, salangane community protection, resident propaganda, human resource training, region cooperarion, sustainable trademark building, market and trade promotion and so on.
