Owning many advantages, marine economy of Van Ninh District, Khanh Hoa Province has made firm progress.

 

Strong in fishery

 

Van Ninh District has the sea surface area of 690 sq.km.. For many years, fishery of Van Ninh District has focused on fishing and aquaculture. With more than 2,350 fishing boats with 64,426CV in power, seafood exploitation has become a key economy of the district. Many boats have been invested for off-shore fishing. Each year, fishing yield reaches about 20,000 tons. Additionally, fishery cooperatives in the district can exploit about 100 tons of mackerels and tunas for export.

 

In aquaculture, the district has focused on valuable fisheries such as lobsters, white-leg shrimps, sweet snails, Cobia fish and butterfish. More than 10,000 cages raising lobsters give about 350 tons of products a year. 550 hectares of ponds produces over 2,000 tons of shrimps a year. They are stable materials for fishery processing factories in the province. Raising sweet snails also has developed strongly. With about 260 hectares of ponds scattered in communes from Van Tho to Van Hung, annual sweet snail production hits over 500 tons. In addition, the district supplies about 250 tons of dried seaweed for the market each year. The yield of Cobia fish and butterfish is about 500 tons a year. Thus, with a firm growth, Van Ninh can earn more than VND500 billion from fishery.

 

Simultaneously, the authority of Van Ninh always intensifies measures to protect fishery sources and eradicate over-exploitation by destructive means like explosive, poison, electricity, etc. Besides, the planning for aquaculture, investing water supply and sewerage, raising breeders’ quality, and managing drugs, chemicals and bio-products reasonably have partly ensured quality of products for export and food safety.

Potential to develop marine tourism

 

Van Ninh District is located to the north of Van Phong Economic Zone, a favorable geographical position to form a marine economic center of the country. In the future, when Van Phong Economic Zone rises again, Van Ninh is expected to be a nucleus of economic growth, an urban – industrial – service – tourism area of the Southern Central, a significant economic area of the Central region, and a spot of international exchange.

 

Along with fishing, aquaculture and marine transport, Van Ninh District has advantages to develop sea tourism. With the wildness of the southern Van Phong Bay, the sea of Van Ninh has been considered as a tropical tourist area with beautiful beach by the World Travel Association and the United Nations Development Programme. The district has Mui Doi - the East Pole of the country, Dai Lanh Beach by Ca Mountain Pass base and other interesting destinations like Hon Ong, Son Dung, Bai Cat Tham, etc. In addition, some types of travel such sightseeing tour, weekend travel and home-stay have started growth in the district. According to Nguyen Hong, manager of the district economic department, Van Ninh attracts about 15,000 tourists a year, including 4,000 – 5,000 foreigners.

 

At present, the district is calling for investment to forward development of the marine economy.
