In recent time, some people in Khanh Vinh District (Khanh Hoa Province) are raising deer as an experiment, which has initial reasons, promising a new heading.

One year ago, Thai Thanh My, living in Suoi Lach Hamlet, Khanh Trung Commune began to raise a herd of 13 deer. Initially, due the raiser’s inexperience, three of the deer dies. Then, thinking that the deer were infected, her family kept only three deer to raise and gave others to another one. Up to now, the three deer have grown well, weighing 50 – 60 kilograms each. Her son, named Hung, shared that raising deer is not difficult as they are fed by leaves which are abundant in Khanh Vinh. Deer rarely get diseases.

Dam Van Vy in Hon Lay Hamlet, Khanh Hiep Commune has also bred 12 spotted deer for 6 months. This herd of deer are from Nghe An Province. Initially, 2 deer also died. But now, the herd of deer are growing well and reproducing. He has just joined them with another herd into a big herd of 20 deer. At present, 4 male deer are giving antlers. Vy also said that raising deer is not hard. Food for them like grass, leaves, etc. is available in the locality. Besides, it’s necessary to supplement bran or corn for them to grow better, especially in the time of cutting their antlers.

Deer antlers still sell well now. A female deer costs about VND8 million, a male deer costs VND12 million. Deer antlers are selling from VND450,000 – VND850,000/kg on farms. With good care, a deer can give antlers in 30 years. Dear antler is precious and nutritious medicine, so there’s a big demand for it. Big orders have to be made right from the beginning of the harvest.

According to Khanh Vinh Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in recent times, there are about 30 deer raised in the district. The department is reckoning up and following to have orientation in the coming time.
