Planting acacia trees has developed in Khanh Son District, Khanh Hoa Province. To create a stable consumption for acacia trees, the district has mobilized businesses to advance investment, guide technologies and committee product purchase for growers.

Bo Bo Bi, an acacia grower in Lien Hoa Hamlet, Son Binh Commune, shared that with high price of acacia (about VND1 million/ton) and productivity of 80 – 90 tons/hectares, growers can earn VND50 – 60 million/hectare after expenses were deducted. For the high profit, growers concentrate on their care to acacia trees to get good output. Moreover, in hill side areas, acacia trees have been grown up replacing for corn and manioc. “My family owns about 2.6 hectares of 3-year-old acacia trees. Previously, the deficiency caused us to sell acacia saplings to traders. Recently, with the district’s support, Dai Thang Woodchip Company Limited (based in Cam Ranh) has signed contracts of product consumption with acacia growers. The company also has advance money for us to invest in acacia tree growing. It’s my pleasure to have long-term business dealings with the company”, said Bo Bo Bi.

Le Thi Nhung in Lien Hoa Hamlet is one of growers who have signed contracts of capital advance and product consumption with Dai Thang Woodchip Company Limited. She said, “My family has over 5 hectares of 4-year-old acacia trees. I have signed a contract to advance investment and commit to sell the company all the harvested acacia trees. This is a good way to create a stable purchase for the acacia trees we grow.”

In 2010, there was only about 300 hectares of acacia trees in Son Binh Commune. Now, the figure is 500 hectares. According to Le Anh Quang, an official in agriculture of Son Binh Commune, in 2015, 26 acacia growing households in the commune signed contracts with Dai Thang Woodchip Company Limited. They were advanced VND435 million in total and committed to sell 100% of the acacia wood. As planned, the commune People’s Committee will suggest this company to continue signing such contracts for 100 hectares of newly-grown acacia trees and 50 hectares of grown ones.

Chairman of Son Hiep Commune People’s Committee Tran Tan Chong said that, “In recent years, the area of acacia trees in the commune has seen a sharp increase. Up to now, the commune features about 280 hectares of acacia trees. The local authority encourages growing acacia trees on areas unable to grow fruit trees and industrial trees. The commune People’s Committee has asked Dai Thang Woodchip Company Limited about capital advance and product consumption for growers. Some households have signed contracts with this company. In 2016, the commune People’s Committee will mobilize 20 – 30 other households to sign such contracts. This helps growers to keep acacia forests, not to sell acacia saplings to magnates.

According to statistics of Khanh Son District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, the district had 440 hectares of acacia trees in 2010, and the figure rose to 1,400 hectares in 2011 – 2014. Up to now, the whole district features 2,500 hectares of acacia trees. The district has defined acacia as a key forestry plant as it’s suitable with the hilly terrain here.
