Operating for one year, Chin Phung farm (in Nam 2 hamlet, Dien Son Commune, Dien Khanh District, Khanh Hoa Province) is a big wild duck farm with 7,000 ducks in total.

Coming to Chin Phung Farm one day, we saw thousands of wild ducks. They look like home ducks but they are very similar.

Cao Minh Tuan Kiet, the owner of Chin Phung Farm, introduced us that his farm is more than 4 hectares in area, including 2 hectares of water surface. Previously, his family had raised fish and grown lotus but it wasn’t successful. Then, while reading newspapers and watching television, he knew that some farmers in the Mekong Delta got big profit from raising wild ducks. Therefore, he decided to change to raising wild ducks. One year ago, he went to some provinces in the Mekong Delta to study how to raise wild ducks and bought 300 breeders, costing more than VND100 million. “My farm has a large water surface area, surrounded by coconuts trees and papaya trees creating shadows. Then, the flock of breeding wild duck grew well and laid eggs regularly”, Kiet said.

Now, Chin Phung farm has become a closed production area with three specific sections, including one for brooders, one for layers and the other for ducks for meat. The farm now has more than 7,000 wild ducks in total, including 1,000 in egg laying section. Each day, they lay nearly 1,000 eggs. The farm has three brooding machines worth more than VND40 million with a capacity of 300 eggs each. To store foodstuff for wild ducks, Kiet has invested a rice reserve which can contain tens of tons and grown water-fern on a 500m2 pond. Besides, disease prevention and cure, cage and farm cleaning, veterinary works and inoculation for the ducks have been made well and periodically.

In Kiet’s view, raising wild ducks is not difficult, breeding time is 4 – 5 months. When a wild duck weighs 1 – 1.2 kg, it can be sold. Wild ducks are tasty and nutritious. They are remedy for kidney, edema, constipation, cough, etc. So, they are favorite. At present, a 1-5 day old duck is selling at VND30,000; a 5-15 day old duck is selling at VND40,000; and duck meat is at VND160,000/kg. Chin Phung farm now supplies about 50 kg of wild ducks for restaurants, earning about VND2 -3 million in profit.
