Farmers supported to escape from poverty

Owing to being tranfered technologies, supported in production and helped each other, many farmers in Cam Lam District, Khanh Hoa Province have escaped from poverty and improved their economy.

Escaping from poverty and rising
 
Nguyen Thi Bach Ngoc’s family in Vinh Trung Hamlet, Cam An Nam Commune which used to be a poor household in 2006 was supported with breeders, capital and breeding skills to grow sugarcanes and raise reproductive pigs. From 2 female pigs, they have raised 10 female pigs, supplying 140 piglets for other farms. Their area of sugarcane and manioc also has risen to 10 poles. Now, her family earns about VND100 million/year. Four her children have graduated university and found jobs. Since 2012, her household has been recognized as a good farming one.
 
Le Nhu Hong’s family in Tan Hai Hamlet, Cam Hai Tay Commune was still a poor household in 2009. Before 2013, his family could earn only VND20 million – VND30 million from growing mangoes on an area of 5,000 sq.m. Taking training classes about planting host by the commune Farmers’ Association and then applying scientific technologies into planting, he has earned nearly VND100 million/year from the mango garden during the past three years.
 

The support of farmer’s associations also has helped many other farmers in Cam Hai Tay Commune to escape poverty. From 2014 to 2015, the number of poor households decreased from 72 to 27.

 

 

 
Farmers’ Association of Cam Thanh Bac Commune also has mobilized thousands of members to change mechanism of plants and domestic animals, intensify information about science and technologies, giving loans to farmers, etc. As a result, the number of poor households in the commune also went down from 120 in 2014 to 87 in 2015.
 
According to Nguyen Lai, chairman of Cam Lam District Farmers’ Association, from 2011 to now, more than 500 households have been supported to escape poverty.
 
Upholding roles of local farmers’ association
 
Cam Lam District Farmers’ Association currently has more than 15,800 members. To renovate direction ways, the association has transferred into consulting and supporting farmers in capital, breeders, new technologies and vocational training. Many models have become effective like growing safe vegetable in Cam Tan, raising rabbits in Cam Duc, growing new rice varieties in Cam Hoa, Cam Tan, Suoi Cat, Cam Thanh Bac, growing mangoes in Cam Hai Tay, Suoi Tan, Cam Duc, etc.
 
From 2011 to now, the association trained to transfer technologies for 5,700 farmers, supported hundreds of breeding cows, hundreds of tons of rice seeds, fertilizers, etc. for farmers. 10 vocational classes have been opened. Over 5 years, more than 2,000 laborers have been given vocational training to have stable jobs.
 
Moreover, the association has called supports from banks and funds to help farmers rise. During the past five years, the district Farmers’ Association coordinated with the Bank of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Bank for Social Policies to entrust nearly VND719 billion to 50,300 households to invest in production. Associations at levels have mobilized more than VND13.1 billion from the Farmer Supporting Fund to support more than 500 households. Better households have supported
1,200 poorer households with VND9.1 billion in total, seeds and breeding animals worth more than VND800 million, over 1,700 jobs with income of VND1.9 million – 3.5 million/month.
