Tran Thi Bich Hue’s family in Vo Dong Hamlet, Vinh Trung Commune, Nha Trang used to be a poor household. To help her family escape from poverty, in 2011, Vinh Trung Commune People’s Committee lent her an area of 500 sq.m. for growing. The provincial Military School gave her seeds and helped her to make trellis. 7 months later, her family harvested the first crop. From that up to now, they have earned about VND2 million a month. “I was lucky when being supported by the commune People’s Committee to raise my children. Now, my children have grown up and my family hasn’t been poor any more”, she said.

According to Le Thi Hoang Ngoc Quy, an official of Vinh Trung Commune People’s Committee, this is only one of cases given help to escape poverty. The commune has used the Fund for the poor to support poor households. In the beginning of each year, poor households registered their solution to escape poverty. Then, the commune considered to support them.
Carrying out the program to reducing poverty sustainably for the period of 2011 – 2015, Nha Trang City Party Committee and People’s Committee set poverty reduction as one of main duties in socioeconomic development of the city. According to Le Thi Mai Loan, head of the city Bureau of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs, policies and projects on poverty reduction like credit for poor households, support in medicine, education, housing, vocational training, etc. were carried out comprehensively, timely and suitably. As a result, in the end of the period, the rate of poor households in the city decreased to 1.25%.
For the period of 2016 – 2021, the city Bureau of Labor, Invalids and Social Affairs will continue counseling the city Party Committee and People’s Committee to make supports for poor households to borrow capital and create jobs, with an aim to reduce poverty sustainably. The city strives to down the rate of poor households to under 1%.
To reach this target, the city will carry out many solutions, including calling support from benefactors associated with the State budget to build or repair houses for the poor, coordinating with businesses to create jobs for local people, stepping up encouragement for agriculture, forestry and fishery, intensifying vocational training, etc.
