More income from dried mango seeds

In recent years, the southwest market has purchased seeds of Thuy Trieu mangos in Cam Lam and Cam Ranh in order to transplant another kind of seeds because Thuy Trieu mango variety has strong roots, help transplanted mango trees grow well. This year, mango seed price increased as twice as that in previous years, bringing good income for growers as well as collectors. In 2014, mango seeds were purchased at VND20,000 – VND30,000/basket (about 470 seeds/basket). In 2015, the price went up to VND70,000/basket. This year, it soared to VND100,000/basket, even dried mango seeds are purchased at VND120,000/basket.

Truong Van Ac in Bai Gieng 2 Hamlet, Cam Hai Tay Commune said that earning from selling dried made up for the loss of his mango garden. His garden with about 3 quintals of fruits from 30 trees, selling at VND10,000 – VND12,000/kg, earned him about VND10,000 million. Meanwhile, price of mango seeds are far higher than that of mangos. From the middle of the crop, he started collecting mango seeds. He hired more 5 laborers with salary of VND120,000/person/day to collect and dry mango seeds. Mango seeds sell very well. For the whole crop, he sold out nearly 1,000 bags of dried mango seeds. 
 
Le Thi Phu in Khanh Thanh Hamlet, Suoi Cat Commune, also shared funs with a good income of VND120,000 – VND150,000/day when being hired to dry mango seeds. Nguyen Tan Doan in Cam Duc Township also revealed an income of several VND million/month by packing mango seeds. 
 
According to Chairman of Cam Lam District Farmers’ Association Nguyen Lai, collecting mango seeds is a seasonal work bringing income for some people. While local mangos have poor crop like this year, mango seeds help to make up a part of loss for farmers.
