Bumper time of anchovies

This time is anchovy fishing crop. Fishermen are enjoying a bumper crop and high price of anchovies.

 

Coming to Hon Ro Fishing Port (in Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang) at 8 am one day, we saw a busy scene of buying and selling anchovies. Bui Van Hieu, the owner of a fishing boat from Ninh Thuan Province, happily told us, “I and five other fishermen have come here for anchovy fishing for one week and all of the trips are bumper of anchovies. This trip, we have caught nearly 1 ton of anchovies. Each of the fishermen can earn VND1.2 million. Another boat owner named Nguyen Thanh Tam (in Phuoc Dong Ward) also said that this time is the crop of anchovies and fishermen are inspired as anchovies are enjoying a bumper crop and sell at higher prices than previous years. “Anchovy fishing trips are made from about 2 am to 8 am. Costing about VND1 million, each trip of our boat catches about 2 tons of anchovies”, Tam shared.

According to a anchovy purchaser named Nguyet, during the past ten days, she has purchased nearly ten tons of anchovies with price of VND17,000 – VND20,000/kg. “I buy fresh anchovies and sell them to other provinces. Anchovies sell well this year. Price is also far higher than that in previous years”, Nguyet said.

 

This time, hundreds of anchovy fishing boats moor Hon Ro Fishing Port each day. Many local people have more jobs to serve it.

 

Anchovy crop last from the fifth to the ninth month of the lunar year. From the beginning of the crop up to now, bumper crop of anchovies with high prices this year has given fishermen good income.
