Changing plants is one of practical and effective measures Dien Dien Commune (in Dien Khanh District, Khanh Hoa Province) has developed to raise income for the local.

In 5 recent years, Huynh Van Loan in Dai Dien Dong 2 Hamlet has studied and changed into growing Thai mangoes and Hoa Loc sweet mangoes on an area of one hectare. To have good-looking and high-quality mangoes, he has wrapped mangoes on trees. This way saves expense for plant protection drugs and care. He also applied many other techniques in growing mangoes. After expenses, each crop of mangoes earns him about VND100 million/hectare.

At present, Dien Dien commune had 542 hectares of 2-crop rice. However, due to the droughts in recent years, rice wasn’t grown up on many areas. Therefore, the commune mobilized farmers to change into growing farm produce and fruits. Up to now, 5 hectares of rice in Dien Dien Commune has changed into gourd, daisy, papaya, etc. Besides, plants with low value have been changed into kinds with more valuable and more suitable with the local soil. At present, the whole province has 500 – 700 hectares of cashew nuts giving stable income, 20 – 30 hectares of mangoes with good varieties like Australian mangoes, Thai mangoes, Taiwan mangoes Hoa Loc sweet mangoes, etc. Some other kinds of fruits like oranges, mandarins, papayas, etc. also give higher profit than rice.

According to Chairman of the commune People’s Committee Phan Van Tri, Dien Dien is a half-mountain half-plain commune with a large area of garden and hill land. During the past years, the commune has many policies on changing plant crops supported by farmers. The commune has facilitated farmers to borrow capital to change from low value plants to high value plants, helping farmers to improve earning on their land. To an area of 1 – 2 hectares, the changing earns farmers VND50 – 70 million/person/year. Consequently, the commune will encourage farmers to borrow money to develop plant crops suitable with the local soil.

Average income per capita in Dien Dien Commune now has reached VND25 million/person/year. The commune aims to be recognized as a new urban area with VND26.5 million/person/year. With the above effective measures in changing plants, the target is expected to be achievable.
