During the past few years, preferential credit programs from the Bank for Social Policies in Van Ninh District (Khanh Hoa Province) have helped thousands of poor households in the district.

Previously, the household of Tran Hiep and Tran Thi Ngoc Sang in Dam Mon Hamlet, Van Thanh Commune, Van Ninh District used to be a poor one. Their four-member family lived in a cottage. The husband was a hired labor and the wife sold fish at market. In 2011, under the guide of the local authority, Hiep applied to borrow VND20 million from the Bank for Social Policies - Van Ninh District to raise lobsters. In the first crop, he earned over VND100 million, and expanded raising from then. Up to now, their family hasn’t poor any more and become a well-to-do family. Hiep said, “To expand lobster raising, we borrowed more VND30 million from the bank in 2015. We have 15 cages with more than 1,000 lobsters now. We expect to earn over VND200 million this crop. Our present good life is thanks to the preferential credit from the Bank for Social Policies - Van Ninh District.”

Nguyen Thu’s household in Dam Mon Hamlet, Van Thanh Commun is another example. His family has got better thanks to borrowing preferential capital to building a new fishing boat. In 2015, he was lent VND20 million by the Bank for Social Policies - Van Ninh District to build a 20CV fishing boat and buy nets for inshore fishing. Now, his family can earn about VND10 million a month.

According to Nguyen Thanh Long, director of the transaction office of the Bank for Social Policies in Van Ninh District, current credit balance of 8 preferential credit program in the district is over VND235 billion with more than 15,000 borrowers. Only so far this year, the transaction office has disbursed more than VND76 billion for over 4,000 borrowers. “From now to the end of the year, we will disburse more VND2 billion, including VND1 billion for poor households and VND1 billion for production and business in difficult areas”, Long said.

The preferential credit has offered capital for poor households and helped them improve living. It has contributed in reducing poverty and ensuring social security.

According to Vice-chairman of Van Ninh District People’s Committee Tran Ngoc Khiem, economy and society of the district during the past years have developed stably. The number of poor households has decreased year by year, and the people’s living has been improved more. Preferential credit from the Bank for Social Policies has contributed much in this result. Such programs need to continue to support the local people.
