Recovering planting after flood

The past rains and floods caused much damage in farming in Khanh Hoa Province. The provincial agriculture is promptly supporting farmers repair the damage and recover farming.

According to Le Tai, deputy manager of Dien Khanh District Economic Department, the heavy rains and floods have damaged the district’s farming severely. 1,500 hectares of winter – spring rice areas have been spoilt; 44 hectares of farm produces have been lost; 400 ornamental plants, 16 hectares of annual plants and 223 hectares of perennial plants have been affected. “Some places are still in flood now, so farmers cannot sow seeds. Stored seeds have been out of. Farm produces have been cleared”, Tai said.
 
In Ninh Hoa Township, agriculture’s damage is estimated to be over VND37 billion. 630 hectares of vegetable was flooded; 2,200 hectares of winter – spring rice crop was damaged; 183 hectares of sugarcanes was fell down; 5,000 pots of daisy flowers were flooded…
 
According to the provincial Plant Protection Agency, total areas of damaged plants in the whole Khanh Hoa were over 10,000 hectares, including 2,000 hectares of crop rice and 5,000 hectares of winter – spring rice. Other plants were lost much, including 1,100 hectares of corn, 335 hectares of vegetable, 1,300 hectares of annual trees, and 300 hectares of fruit trees.
 
To support farmers in recovering production, Dien Khanh District directed farmers to sow seeds right when the flood was gone down. The target is by January 15, 2017. Agricultural cooperatives will supply seeds for farmers, and other seed suppliers will also be called for. Ninh Hoa District also petitioned the seed support from the provincial authority. 
 
The provincial Plant Protection Agency also has suggested the Department of Crop Production (under the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development) urgently providing some kinds of seeds, including 1,134 tons of rice seeds (OM 4900, ML 202), 21.6 tons of corn seeds (LVN 61, PAC 339) and 2 tons of vegetable seeds to farmers sow for the lunar New Year festival.
 
Besides, the agriculture is also directing farmers to recover winter-spring production, sanitize rice fields, etc. Sowing seeds for winter-spring crop is set to finish by January 15, 2017. Vegetable is grown between January 5 to January 15, 2017.
