Van Ninh District grows new rice varieties

Since end 2016, Van Ninh District (Khanh Hoa Province) has started growing new varieties of rice, aiming to cut cost and raise income for farmers.

In the winter – spring crop of 2016 – 2017, new rice variety DT45 has experimentally grown on an area of 10 hectares in Van Phuoc Commune by 56 households. The rice is entering harvest crop. Le Van Hang, an agriculture encouragement official in the commune, said that, despite the unfavorable weather, the rice has grown well. “To access this variety of rice, we has a seminar which reach a conclusion that it gives high productivity, raising income for farmers. The quantitative productivity of this rice variety is about 80 quintals/hectare, higher than 72 quintals/hectare of the variety Ma Lam. The two varieties of rice have the same price of VND5,500/kg. In addition, cost for the new rice variety is only VND14.6 million while that for the old one is over VND15.6 million. In next crop, we will expand this variety to 250 hectares”, Hang said.

Similarly, Van Phu Commune has started growing OM7347 on area of 10 hectares as a test in the winter – spring crop. This is a favorite rice variety at the market. It can give 65 – 70 quintals/hectare in productivity with price of VND6,000 – VND6,500/kg. In the coming summer – autumn crop, the commune will expand growing this rice variety to 22 hectares.

According to Nguyen Ngoc Y, manager of Van Ninh District Economic Department, new rice varieties in the winter – spring crop in the district were DT45 and OM7347. DT45 was grown in Van Phuoc Commune (10 hectares) and Van Khanh Commune (7 hectares). OM7347 was grown in Van Phu Commune (10 hectares). Growing new rice varieties as a model is a breakthrough of Van Ninh District. It’s suitable with the demand of local farmers. The new rice varieties have better productivity and yield.

As planned, in the coming summer – autumn crop, the above communes continues the model of growing new rice varieties and more 10 hectares in Xuan Son Commune will be grown new varieties. To expand growing new rice varieties effectively, the district Economic Department has a plan to support the communes in prices, plant protection drugs, guiding, etc.

In the coming time, Van Ninh District People’s Committee will organize training classes about new rice varieties to improve growing techniques for farmers, and then aim to popularize the model in the whole province, said Vo Luc Pham, the district’s vice-chairman.
