Economic effects from green-skin grapefruits

In recent years, many farmers in Khanh Son District (Khanh Hoa Province) have grown green-skin grapefruits. This kind of fruits has showed suitable with the soil in the district and given high economic effects.

Over ten years ago, Huynh Thu, living Du Oai Hamlet, Son Lam Commune, was the first one who brought green-skin grapefruit variety from the south eastern region to grow in Khanh Son District. From one tree initially, he has developed to 1 hectares of grapefruit trees now. He said that green-skin grapefruit trees are very suitable with soil in Khanh Son, easy to care and economic. “Grapefruit trees start bearing fruits after 3 – 4 years and fruit many times in a year. The older trees get, the more production they make. A grapefruit tree 10 years old and more can give earning of VND20 million/year. Only in 2016, my family earned VND180 million from 40 grapefruit trees. To expand areas for growing green-skin grapefruits, I have multiplicated 5,000 green-skin grapefruit trees and supplied them for farmers in the district”, Thu said.

With economic effects of green-skin grapefruits, many farmers in communes like Son Lam, Ba Cum Nam, Son Binh, Son Trung, etc. in Khanh Son District. Cao Dinh, chairman of Son Lam Commune Farmers’ Association, said, “The  Farmers’ Association is establishing the cooperative group of green-skin grapefruit growers in the commune. In the group, experienced members will guide the new ones in techniques and seeders.”
 
Some other communes have organized training classes about green-skin grapefruit growing techniques. A farmer named Mau Thai Nhanh 
(in Lien Hoa Hamlet, Son Binh Commune) said, “In 2016, my family changed over 1 pole of growing corn into growing green-skin grapefruits. Before growing, I took training classes. Now, our 50 grapefruit trees are growing well.”
 
Khanh Vinh District Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has just made Project to support growing green-skin grapefruits and rambutans in the period of 2017 – 2020 on an area of 220 hectares in the district, including 150 hectares of green-skin grapefruits. The department has proposed support solutions for farmers, especially seeders, fertilizers and plant protection drugs. “The district has built itinerary to carry out the project from now to 2020 and ways to find stable output for growers. More 42 hectares of green-skin grapefruits is expected to be grown in the district in 2017”, said Bo Bo Thi Kien, deputy manager of the district Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
