Anchovy crop comes late

Anchovy crop comes late this year. Anchovy yield is not as much as that in the same time last year.

The area along the embankment in Nguyen Van Linh Street (Hon Ro, Phuoc Dong Commune, Nha Trang) these days are busy as anchovy fishing boats land every morning. “Anchovy fishing is normally on the second month of the lunar year. But this year, the anchovy crop is later. Anchovies start appearing only from the fourth month of the lunar year”, said Nguye Lung, the owner of boat KH35304TS.

Another fisherman, named Le Van Dung, the owner of KH09432TS boat, said, “The waters for anchovy fishing is only 5 – 7 nautical miles from shore; therefore, fishing anchovies doesn’t take much time and cost. Boats go to sea from 2am and come back on 8am. Cost for an anchovy fishing trip is only VND800,000 – VND1 million. For example, our boat has caught about 220 kilograms of anchovies this trip, earning VND3 million after expenses. Each of the fishermen is paid VND200,000.”

Anchovy crop often lasts from the second to the eighth month of the lunar year. In this time last year, each boat earned 1 – 3 tons of anchovies in each fishing trip. This year, anchovies appear later, no boats have fished over 700 kilograms/trip. The abnormal weather during the past time may account for the late anchovy crop. However, the number of anchovies is rising.

At present, about 40 anchovy fishing boats of fishermen in Hon Ro and Ninh Thuan Province landed the embankments in Nguyen Van Linh Street to sell anchovies. Huyen, an anchovy purchaser in this area said, “Current purchasing price of anchovies is VND18,000/kg, higher than that in the same time last year. I purchase anchovies and then sell them in the province and to some southern provinces and highland provinces.

Although the anchovy crop comes late and yield hasn’t been high, local fishermen believe that the yield will keep rising, which will give them higher income.
