Producing power from bagasse

Two sugar-cane in Khanh Hoa Province are producing power from bagasse, partly reducing production cost and protecting environment.

Two sugar-cane in Khanh Hoa Province are producing power from bagasse, partly reducing production cost and protecting environment.

Ninh Hoa Sugar Factory (under Bien Hoa – Ninh Hoa Sugar One Member  Company Limited) has produced power from bagasse since 2006. Then, the factory could produce power for itself to processing 1,800 tons of sugar-cane each day. In 2010, the plant raised its processing capacity to 3,000 tons of sugarcane. The factory could produce 7 million KWh a year (2.5 MW an hour). Then, the factory not only supplied enough power for itself but also generated to the nation grid.

In 2013 when the factory’s sugar processing capacity rose to 5,200 tons/day and the factory had a large amount of bagasse, its governor Thanh Thanh Cong Group established Ninh Hoa Thermoelectricity One-member Company Limited majoring in producing electricity.

According to Ho Nhan – General director of Ninh Hoa Thermoelectricity One-member Company Limited, by the current production line, the amount of bagasse from a ton of sugarcane can produce 51KWh of electricity on average. If the sugarcane processing capacity increases, the electricity productivity will rise more. Since the beginning of the 2016 – 2017 sugarcane crop, Ninh Hoa Sugar Factory has processed 625,000 tons of sugarcane, generating 34.6 million KWh.

Similarly, Khanh Hoa Sugar Factory (of Khanh Hoa Sugar Co., Ltd) has also produced electricity from bagasse for many years to supply power and steam for sugar manufacture. In addition, the factory also generated at least 8MW/h to the national grid.

According to Nhan, previously, bagasse had caused pollution, the sugarcane factory took cost to transport them to other places. When the factory invests in electricity production, the environment has been kept and the company can have power for themselves and sell electricity for the national grid. At present, Ninh Hoa Thermoelectricity One-member Company Limited is supplying 8% of the power in the province.

In the view of Do Thanh Liem – General director of Khanh Hoa Sugar Co., Ltd, producing electricity from bagasse is encouraged by advanced countries in the world as it is a kind of green energy.
