Good income from raising arcas
Dao Minh Tien was the first household changing from raising fish to raising arcas in Cam Phuc Bac Ward. “While raising fish, I realized that arcas grew well here. Then, in 2012, we changed to raise some kinds of arcas. At the first time, I released about 5,000 breeders with total expenditure of VND40 million. 10 months laters, I harvested and earned an interest of VND100 million. Then, I expanded raising to 2 hectares. Now, I have arcas to sell every time”, Tien said.
On average, Tien raises more than 70 million breeders. In 10 months, 25 – 30 arcas weigh 1 kilogram, selling at VND100,000/kg, particularly snout otter clams at VND250,000/kg. After expenses, Tien’s family can earn over VND400 million each year. “Raising arcas is simple and costs little”, he said.

Following Tien’s family, many other households have changed to raise arcas. An arca raiser named Vi Thanh Dong said that his family has 15 arca raising parts. Each of the parts has an area of 100 sq.m where 10 million of breeders are released and give 7 tons of arcas 10 months later. “Profit from arcas is not as high as other kinds of fishery, but it surely make profits. During the past years, my family have raised arcas only. It doesn’t cost expense for foodstuff, has no epidemic diseases and undergo little loss. Relying on that, our family economy has risen”, Dong said.
According to the leadership of Cam Phuc Bac Ward People’s Committee, about 40 households in the ward have changed to raising arcas.
No more worry about breeders
Previously, raisers had a worry abour arca breeders as they are natural. When the number of arca raisers rose, arca breeder resources became more scarce and increased in price. Sometimes, a breeder may cost up to VND1,500.
But now, the worry has been no longer as Nam Dai Duong Fishery Development Company in Cam Phu Ward, Cam Ranh City can create arca breeders. Dao Minh Tien said, “In 2 recent years, arca breeders supplied by the company has facilitated raisers. Breeder price is only VND70. We can order breeders by phone and they are home delivered. The company also has technicians to guide raisers.”
According to Nguyen Thi Huong, a technician of Cam Ranh City Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery Encouragement Station, in Cam Ranh, at present, only arcas are raised in Cam Phuc Bac Ward with over 10 hectares. “Arcas grow well in this place and no epidemic diseases have occurred. However, we still follow and guide raisers frequently”, Huong said.
