Cam Phuoc Dong goat raising cooperative has just established in Cam Ranh City, Khanh Hoa Province. This is the first cooperative managed by the local Women’s Association, opening orientation of collective economic development for women in the commune.
Precursor to the cooperative is the goat raising group managed by the commune Women’s Association since 2015. Over years, the herd of goats has risen sharply. In 2015, the ten members of the association has about 200 goats, and the figure has increased to 573 in 2017. Sales have also made increase form 122 goats in 2015 to about 300 in 2017. Then, income from raising goats of the association’s members has also gone up. As a result, Cam Phuoc Dong Commune Women’s Association called members to upgrade to become a cooperative with an aim to invest bigger goat raising scale and apply science in breeding for production in closed chain.
Cam Phuoc Dong goats raising cooperative has 10 members with initial charter capital of VND400 million. The cooperative majors in producing goat breeders, raising goats for meat, supplying breeding techniques, etc. The cooperative committed to supply enough breeding facilities and purchase all output for its members.
According to Nguyen Van Tuan, the president and director of the cooperative, raisers can take the advantages of the large hill land in the commune as gazing land. The goats are easy to breed and reproduce well. It takes about 1 year for a goat to grow up and reproduce. A mother goat can give birth three times every two years, with 2 – 4 baby goats each time. Goats for meat are raised for about 7 months, weighting 30 kilograms. Demand for goats are high; therefore, the raisers feel secure about output. Each member of the cooperative raises 50 goats on average, earning at least VND50 million/year. “I’ve raised goats for 2 years. Being guide techniques by Mr. Tuan, I can earn profit from raising goats, with stable income”, Nguyen Thi Thuy Linh, a raiser said.
Cam Phuoc Dong Commune also has hundreds of other goat raisers. Particularly in Giai Phong Hamlet, there are about 100 raisers. Truong Thi Ngoc Chau, chairwoman of Cam Phuoc Dong Commune Women’s Association, said that the cooperative frequently holds experience exchanges for the members to help each other in breeding.
According to Le Minh Hien – chairwoman of Khanh Hoa Provincial Women’s Union, the union is managing about 15 cooperative groups for production of women. The goat raising cooperative group of Cam Phuoc Dong has worked well and been upgraded to be a cooperative. It’s an example for female farmers in the province to learn.
