Durian gardens in Khanh Vinh District to be re-grown

People in Khanh Vinh District, Khanh Hoa Province are re-growing durian gardens damaged by the storm Damrey.

Nguyen Thanh Buu, in Tay hamlet, Song Cau commune, said that the storm broken all 250 blooming durian trees on his 1-hectare garden. These trees were 12 years old. His damage costs about VND2 billion. Beside this garden, we saw people tiding up another durian garden. Broken trees were cut into timbers with 20 – 30 cm in diameter.  
 
In Khanh Thanh Commune, many durian gardens were collapsed. Digging holes to grow new plants, a farmer named Le Tran Tien Dung in Ta Mo hamlet said that he used to earn about VND1 billion from 3 hectares of durian trees with 40 tons each year, but now his durian trees have fallen down while he still owes the bank VND200 million.

According to Nguyen Ngoc Hoa - Acting Chairman of Song Cau Commune People’s Committee, Song Cau Commune had 23 hectares of durian trees, 80% of which were damaged. The rest are 1 – 2 years old.  
Farmers in Khanh Vinh had to tidy up their garden and re-grow new trees. A farmer named Le Tran Tien Dung ordered hundreds of saplings from the western south with the price of VND100,000/sapling but he had to wait till they can be sold. He also prepared 40 tons of organic fertilizer and 2 tons of chemical fertilizer when growing new trees. Buu in Song Cau also revealed to order 200 saplings from the west and fertilizer to start again. 
 
The storm Damrey caused damage worth more than VND105 billion to the farming in Khanh Vinh District, including 90 hectares of durian trees. Durian is the main plant in Khanh Vinh District, grown in communes like Song Cau, Khanh Trung, Khanh Thanh, Khanh Thuong, Khanh Phu, etc.
