Dominating in quantity but this year domestic confectionery is competing with imported products.

Confectionery market for Tet this year sees few new kinds but it is still abundant in brandnames, kinds and prices for buyers to choose. Beside big domestic brandnames like Bibica, Hai Ha, Kinh Do, Huu Nghi, etc., there are joint venture brandnames like Orion, Topcare, etc. At markets, confectionery and jam for Tet are selling well. A seller at Xom Moi Market named Pham Khanh My, cans of cookie by Kinh Do and Bibica with prices of VND120,000 – VND200,000 each still have large customers. Cans of candies have price of VND19,000 – VND72,000 each. “This year, people like to buy dried seeds or fruits like walnut, macamadia, almond, etc. So, I have to store these products more to sell”, a seller said.

Jam market this year not only has traditional kinds of jam like coconut, ginger, lotus seeds, etc. but new kinds like guava jam, pineapple jam, grapefruit jam, etc.

Prices of some kinds of seeds and jam: walnut: VND250,000 – VND280,000/kg, macamadia: VND260,000 – VND300,000/kg, cashew nut: VND300,000 – VND350,000/kg, almond: VND220,000 – VND270,000/kg, watermelon seeds: VND110,000 – VND130,000/kg.

On confectionery shelves of supermarkets of Co.opmart, Lotte Mart, VinMart and Big C, domestic products make up 80% - 95%. Imported products have smaller quantity but they also sell well. They are imported from many countries like France, USA, Denmark, Russian, Thailand, Korea, Malaysia, Japan, etc. The imported products are good looking; their prices aren’t so much expensive. Supermarkets are offering some discounts for these products. For example, LU cookies: VND93,000/300-gram box, Goute: VND171,000/648-gram box, Butte Toffees candies: VND81,500/180-gram box, Lot100 candies: VND61,500/320-gram box.

At some big confectionery stores, there are bigger rate of imports. A confectionery store owner in 2-4 Street, Nha Trang said that to bring more choices for customers, her store has a number of imported products. Their prices are 15% higher than those of domestic products.  Some stores major in imports only.

To ensure food safety, the Market Management Team No. 1 is checking confectionery products in some markets in Nha Trang like Dam Market, Xom Moi Market, Vinh Hai Market, etc.
