Farmers in Khanh Son start planting right after Tet

Right from first days of the lunar new year (Tet), farmers in Khanh Son District (Khanh Hoa Province) have started growing and breeding.

Focusing on fruit trees, industrial trees and purple sugarcanes
 
Mai Thi Xuan Tham’s family started cutting bananas for sale from the 4th day of the lunar new year. She said that this year traders purchased bananas sooners than usual for the 15th day of the lunar new year. Bananas are purchased at VND4,000/kg. Therefore, her family could earn money right from the first days of the lunar new year. “After harvesting bananas in th first days of the lunar year, we will start watering and fertilizing our coffee and durian trees, which are blooming”, Tham said.
 
Bo Bo La Xuan’s family (in A Pa 2 Hamlet, Thanh Son Commune) has 8 poles of coffee, 2 hectares of bananas and more than 1 hectare of acacia. Due to the storm Damrey in 2017, their growing areas have been damaged, lowering their income. With the guide of the local authority, his family have started restoring production. “My family are taking care of and fertilizing our fruit trees and industrial trees”, Xuan said.
 
At present, farmers in Khanh Son District are sowing seeds and taking care of plants of the winter – spring crop. They are also take water from rivers and streams to their fields. Besides, the local authorities are guiding farmers to recover growing areas damaged in the storm, especially banana areas to harvest in end 2018.

Keep changing ineffective plants
 
According to the leadership of the district People’s Committee, Khanh Son District strives for a 10% growth in agricultural and forest production value in 2018. Target of sowing areas in the whole district in 2018 is over 5,000 hectares. The reach targets, the district directs communes and towns to maintain planting areas suitable with soil and effective like durian, grapefruit, rambutan, purple sugarcane, etc.; encourages farmers to develop the model of agriculture – forest farms; changes about 250 hectares of poor crops to kinds of plants giving high economy…
 
”Right from early 2018, the district has directed communes and towns to change rice areas without water supply and plant areas with low economic effectiveness into valuable fruit plants, mainly durian, rambutan and green-skin grapefruit. The district also supports farmers, especially the ethnic minority people, in changing plants and animals”, said Phan Van Suu, vice-chairmman of Khanh Son District People’s Committee.
