Farmers in some communes in the north of Van Ninh District have started harvesting the winter – spring rice crop. Despite unfavorable conditions, the winter – spring rice has a good crop. Le Van Thanh, a farmer with nearly 50 hectares of rice in Van Binh Commune, said that productivity of this winter - spring rice crop on his field hit nearly 70 quintals/hectare. After expenses, he earns nearl VND20 million on each hectare.
According to Nguyen Van Hue, Chairman of Van Binh Commune Farmers’ Association, the whole commune sowed more than 300 hectares of rice. Rice has grown well. Rice price at the early harvest has gone up to VND7,000/kg, far higher than that last year. The highest rice price in the same crop last year was about VND6,400/kg. “Farmers are delighted with this new year harvest. The worry after the storm has gone. 45 hectares of rice area in the commune has been harvested. The rest area also promises a bumper crop”, Hue said.

In this winter - spring crop, farmers mostly grew the main rice variety of Van Ninh District during the past many years, that is IR 17494. Nguyen Thi Hue, a rice purchaser in Van Ninh, “This variety give tasty rice with high starch content, which is suitable for producing rice vermicelli. Therefore, it is favorite of producers, and farmers also enjoy benefits.”
According to Nguyen Dinh Cam, manager of Van Ninh District Plant Protecting Station, the whole province has more than 3,000 hectares of winter - spring rice crop. Rice productivity and price is higher than that in the same crop last year. The station frequently checks and reminds farmers of growing period of rice.
Beside rice, garlic is one of main plants in Van Ninh District, grown in Van Hung Commune and Van Thanh Commune. This crop, the whole province has about 250 hectares of garlic. Some growers have started harvesting garlic. Productivity is about 7 – 8 quintals of garlic per pole, higher than that last year (7.5 quintals of garlic/pole). Current garlis price is VND35,000 – VND40,000/kg of garlic.
