Cam Ranh City is setting up a project to develop areas to growing safe vegetable. Three areas are planned to locate in communes of Cam Phuoc Dong, Cam Thanh Nam and Cam Nghia. The project aims to transfer ineffective rice and annual plant areas into vegetable areas, and form safe vegetable planting vegetable in concentrated production and in association with product sale. Till 2020, safe vegetable planting areas qualified for GAP standard will make up 20% of the safe planting areas of the city and the portion will rise to 30% in 2030.

According to Nguyen Binh Nhat, deputy manager of Economic Department of Cam Ranh City, the project proposes some measures to develop safe vegetable areas, including investing infrastructures of the planting areas according to VietGAP standard, growing vegetable in net houses and green houses, applying automatic watering method in some kinds of vegetable like carrots, tomatoes, cucumbers, onions, etc. Besides, growers will be trained about the process to produce safe vegetable, production process and product output will be controlled strictly, groups to produce safe vegetable will be set up, etc. Some other ways finding stable sale in big markets like Nha Trang, Phan Rang, Ho Chi Minh City, etc., applying technological advances in producing, preserving and processing vegetable, looking for and signing exclusive sales contract with big consumers like supermarkets, wholesale markets, businesses, etc.
Le Van Hoang, a vegetable grower in Tra Son, Cam Phuoc Dong Commune said that people here have earned living by growing vegetable for tens of years. With favorable weather and stable output, the growers earn stable income. However, when sales meet difficulties, a lot of vegetable is unsold. At present, his 4-member family are growing 4 poles of vegetable with average income of VND1.5 – 2 million/person/month. He supported growing safe vegetable but he expects the State to create stable output for the vegetable.
Tien Ra is the cooperative group of growing safe vegetable in Cam Ranh City. The group supplies 4 – 5 tons of vegetable for Cam Ranh City and Nha Trang City. The group has regular customers that are restaurants, supermarkets, etc. in Cam Ranh City.
According to Ngo Van Nhe, Chairman of Cam Thanh Nam Commune Farmers’ Association, if the State supports technologies and creates stable sales for safe vegetable, growers will follow it.
