A farmer in Ninh Hoa Township shared that as sugarcane suffered loss for the continuous crops, he has changed to growing Australian mangoes. More than 1000 Australian mango trees have been grown in his field now.
According to Nguyen Quoc Thai, Vice-chairman of Cam Thanh Nam Commune People’s Committee, mangoes, especially Australian mangoes are being attended to. Therefore, a lot of farmers have changed into growing Australian mangoes and some other kinds. As planned, 7.5 hectares of sugarcane has been changed into growing mangoes.
According to the leadership of High Technology Agriculture Center, the center has received a lot of orders of mango growers. Up to now, the number of seedlings sold is more than 12,000, equal to 60 hectares of Australian mangoes (200 plants/hectare). 6000 plants among them (equal to 30 hectares) are in Khanh Hoa Province. New planting areas are being expanded, especially in Ninh Hoa and Dien Khanh. In the three recent years, farmers in the west commune of Ninh Hoa Township like Ninh Tan, Ninh Trung, Ninh Quang, Ninh Thuong and Ninh Hung have swarned into growing Australian mangoes. Despite the sharp increase in purchase, price of Australian mango seedlings at the center has increased slightly by VND2,000/plant to VND27,000/plant due to the increase in labor cost. At the current market, price of Australian mango seedlings has come up to VND35,000/plant.
According to Mai Xuan Thuong, director of the High Technology Agriculture Center, Australian mango variety of the center has outstanding advantages as the center has connected with Australian partners to bring Australian mangoes to Vietnam. Now, Australian mango seedlings are transplanted into the local mango variety, so they grow very well. The Australian mango variety of the center has been recognized as the typical farm product for three continuous years by the Vietnam Farmers’ Union, the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
