Economic Section of Dien Khanh District in 2016 launched a model of growing mulberry leaves and breeding silkworms in the district with the participation of Hoang Mai NMC Co., Ltd. In 2016, the district Agriculture and Forestry Encouragement Station performed 1 hectare of growing mulberry leaves for breeding silkworms in Dien Dong Commune with VND17.3 million supported for 5 households to carry out. In 2017, the district performed 3 hectares of growing mulberry leaves in communes of Dien Dong, Dien Tho, Dien Son and Suoi Hiep with total VND51,8 million supported for 6 households from the agriculture encouraging fund. In 2018, the district did on 3 hectares of growing mulberry leaves in Dien Tan Commune, Dien Lam Commune and Dien Xuan Commune with VND51.8 million supported. From the second year, grower have earned interest. According to Hoang Ky Vu, Chairman of Dien Dong Commune People’s Committee, mulberry leaf growing and silkworm breeding has created more jobs for rural laborers. At present, Dien Dong Commune has over 10 hectares of mulberry trees.
According to Dien Khanh District Economic Section, the district has a lot of advantages for growing mulberry leaves and breeding silkworms as the climate and soil are suitable for this industry, and land for growing mulberry trees is abundant. Productivity of mulberry leaves here is about 25 tons/hectare/year.
From models performed by the district Agriculture and Forestry Station, local people have developed areas to grow mulberry leaves and breed silkworms. Till end 2018, the whole district has 14.8 hectares, including 0.8 hectares of Hoang Mai NMC Co., Ltd. and 14 hectares in communes Dien Son, Suoi Hiep, Dien Tho, Dien Dong, Dien Tan, Suoi Tien, Dien Phuoc, Dien Lam and Dien Xuan.
According to Nguyen Tan Cuong, manager of Dien Khanh District Economic Section, in long term, the district will make planning and tendency to develop area of growing mulberry leaves and breeding silkworms reasonably. The district also will intensify activities to popularize techniques in growing mulberry leaves and breeding silkworms, hygien, preventing diseases for silkworms, raising quality for silkworms, etc. The district also will aim to establish cooperative groups in this industry in the cooperation with businesses for stable purchase…
