Good weather and enough water have helped durians grow well. Nguyen Van De, in Son Binh Commune said that his 200-durian-tree garden are growing well, many of the trees will be harvested in end July. Price of durians is high now. Purchase price right in the garden is about VND70,000/kg, and may be higher when selling in other places, De revealed. He also estimated to harvest about 2 tons of durians in more than 1 month.
According to Nguyen Ngoc Hieu, manager of Khanh Son Agriculture and Rural Development Department, the whole district has about 1,000 hectares of durians. In end July and early August, about 600 hectares will be harvested, the rest are growing up. Durian price ranges from VND80,000 to VND90,000/kg currently and may go up more. In the harvest, traders will purchase durians right in gardens. Some growers carry durians to other places like Nha Trang, Cam Ranh or other provinces to sell at higher prices.
Hieu also said that to protect the trademark of Khanh Son durians, the district Agriculture and Rural Development Department and the authority of communes to propaganize growers to change to organic planting. Besides, geographical indication will be made to introduce this products on media.
“To do marketing for the local farming and good fruits, the district will organize the second Fruit Festival. At the festival, a fruit competition will be held. In addition, there will be a workshop on durian production to improve durian quality more”, said Hieu.
