Due to the influence of drought, many forest areas in Khanh Hoa Province have been damaged. Currently, many localities in the province have rains so afforestation is being accelerated.

This dry season has left serious consequences for many forest areas of Southern Khanh Hoa Protection Forest Management Board. More than 1,207 hectares of forests has been damaged. Also because of the drought, more than 100 hectares of planted forests in Cam Ranh and Khanh Son were damaged. Nearly 88 hectares of planted forests in Van Ninh district and more than 154 hectares in Ninh Hoa town have been damaged due to drought, according to statistics by Northern Khanh Hoa Protection Forest Management Board. The value of the forest damaged by drought in the whole province is more than VND13.17 billion.

To overcome the loss of forests caused by drought, the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has directed units to monitor the damage level and the resilience of forest trees to take measures. For natural forests, if the ability to recover is poor, measures for zoning and regeneration of forests, additional afforestation and forest enrichment will be implemented. For planted forests, areas that are able to recover will be planted in the rainy season this year, heavily damaged areas will be replanted.

Preparing seedlings for planting forests

Recently, Khanh Son district has rains continuously, which is very convenient for afforestation, so localities in the district have urgently brought seedlings to 90 households participating in the project to support afforestation. In the period of 2020 - 2022, the district will plant more than 126 hectares of forest in 5 communes and towns in the district. Many households have finished planting. In addition, many other households, also took advantage of the favorable weather to seed hundreds of hectares of planted forests.

The forest planting season in the province usually takes place in 2 times. The first time is around May and June when it has a thunderstorm and the second time is around the end of August and early September when it rains frequently. This year, due to drought, planted forest area in the first time was very low, but for the second time, mountainous areas had early rain, so many units immediately started to plant forests and take care of forests. As of mid-August, State forest owners in the province have planted 566.3 hectares of concentrated planted forest, reaching nearly 60% of the target for the whole 2020; taken care of more than 2,480ha of forest, reaching more than 90% of the target ... The units are continuously focusing on human resources and seedlings in each area to conduct afforestation in order to soon complete the planting plan approved.

According to Mr. Tran Minh Thu - Deputy Director of Forest Protection Department, at present, localities and forest owners have completed the afforestation documents, prepared the fields and seedlings to plant forests when the weather is rainy. With the favorable weather and abundant labor, the units are expected to complete the plan of planting and tending forests by the end of September this year. In comparison with the recent 2-3 years, this year's planting progress is faster. Accelerating the afforestation will contribute to overcoming the consequences of drought, increasing the rate of forest cover in the coming years.
