Dang Thai Luyen, the owner of a 5-hectare grapefruit garden in Khanh Phu commune, said that his garden may give 25 - 30 tons of fruits. Although it is not yet the time to harvest, many traders have ordered to purchases the fruits to sell to northern provinces and cities. In addition, his grapefruits are grown according to VietGAP standards, so they will be sold to supermarkets during this Tet holiday. At the end of the year, it has rains but no strong winds, which does not affect the grapefruit much. The selling price to traders is currently from 28,000 to 30,000 VND/kg. Growers expect the price to increase when the Tet holiday approaches.
Khanh Dong commune also has about 65ha of grapefruits being cared and waiting for harvest. A grower named Nguyen Van Ngoc (Suoi Sau village) said, that his family are taking care of nearly 5ha of green-skin grapefruits to prepare for Tet. The recent storm caused fruit loss in the commune. Particularly, his garden lost about 2 grapefruits. Therefore, the grapefruit harvest may decrease.
Besides, grapefruit sale this year is also forecast to decrease, grapefruits were exported to other countries while they are mainly consumed in the country this year. "This year, traders in southern provinces also bring grapefruits here to sell with lower price than Khanh Vinh green-skin grapefruits of Khanh Vinh, so the competitiveness is quite high", Tran Thi Nguyet a trader specializing in purchasing green-skin grapefruits in Khanh Vinh district.
According to Luong Nguyen Nhat Truong - Deputy Head of Department of Agriculture and Rural Development of Khanh Vinh District, at present, the total area of green grapefruits in the whole district is about 600 hectares, 200 hectares of which have fruits to be harvested from now to the lunar new year. The weather in the coming time is quite favorable for grapefruits to develop, so people are looking forward a bumper crop of grapefruits.
