Khanh Son District Association of Farmers has recently promoted the movement "Farmers produce and do business well, uniting to help each other get rich and reduce poverty sustainably". From this movement, the members have brought into play the spirit of mutual solidarity to develop production and business, actively contributing to poverty reduction in the district.
Many effective models
Cao Dinh - Chairman of the Farmers’ Association of Son Lam commune said, in order to improve the effectiveness of the movement, the association has deployed a model of good farmers to help its members, established a professional association of planting and caring for durians (30 members), a grapefruit planting cooperative group (17 members) for the members to support each other in seedling, science and output. Typically, the household of Mai Van Khang (in Cam Khanh village) has an area of more than 10 hectares planting fruit trees of high value (durians, pomelos, mangosteens...), earning an average annual profit of 2 billion VND, creating regular jobs for 10 local workers with an average income of 4.5 million VND/month. Khang has also found out outputs for farm products of the group members. He has won the title of good farmer at central level for many years.
Currently, more and more farmers of ethnic minorities in Khanh Son are earning hundreds of million VND per year. The household of Cao Van Hung (in Hon Gam village, Ba Cum Nam commune) growing durians is an example. Cao Van Hung was one of the first households in Ba Cum Nam commune to grow durian 8 years ago. Up to now, his family has 100 durian trees and 60 green-skin grapefruit trees. In which, 40 durian trees have harvested, earning more than 100 million VND per year.
Besides familiar crops, for the past 2-3 years, many farmers in Khanh Son have explored and put into production new varieties. A prominent example is the model of growing strawberries in a greenhouse of Tran Thi Phuong's household (in Hon Gam village, Ba Cum Nam commune). Phuong said, her family has been planting strawberries for 2 years, with an area of 300m2, harvesting about 20kg each month with selling price of 200,000 - 300,000 VND/kg. In addition, her family also sells seedlings and shares experiences for people in the district to replicate this model.
According to Chairman of Khanh Son District People's Committee Mau Xuan Hanh, the movement of good farmers in the district is developing more and more, partly reducing the rate of poor households in the district. In 2020, the whole district has 3,174 households getting the title of good production and business at all levels, an increase of 486 households compared to 2019. Of which, 28 households are at the central level (up 12 households), 146 households are at the provincial level (up 16 households), and 658 households are at the district level (up 186 households).
Supportive solutions
Over the past time, farmers’s associations in the district have increased their support for people in science and techniques of cultivation and husbandry. In 2020, the associations organized 45 courses of vocational training and technology transfer for thousands of members, especially farming according to VietGAP process. Th associations coordinated with agricultural material sellers and Son Binh Fruit Tree Cooperative to supply 44 tons of fertilizers, plant protection drugs and thousands of seedlings to students and farmers. Currently, the district has established 2 cooperatives and 24 professional associations for farmers to support each other in production techniques to find outputs for agricultural products.
By the end of 2020, 1,300 members borrowed capital from the District Bank for Social Policies (with outstanding loans of nearly 57 billion VND) to invest in production and business models, building clean water works and environmental sanitation. From the beginning of 2020 up to now, 28 members have borrowed 575 million VND from the Farmers Support Fund to invest in taking care of plants and animals.
According to Mau Xuan Hanh, in 2021, the association will focus on supporting members and farmers in technology and capital, improve the efficiency of the collective economic model, maintain a model of good production households to help each other. Beside this, the association will support and mobilize members and farmers to participate in the farm product market to connect supply and demand between companies and businesses inside and outside the province.
