In 2019, the Farmers' Association of Van Hung commune (Van Ninh district, Khanh Hoa) built a group of growing fruit trees. After 2 years of operation, the model has promoted its initial effectiveness, promising to bring good income for local people.
Before 2018, Nguyen Thanh Dung (Xuan Tay village, Van Hung commune) had 1 ha of garden and rice land, but it didn’t make high economic efficiency. Therefore, he decided to improve the land to plant 200 green-skin grapefruit trees, 15 mango trees, 100 coconut trees, 15 jackfruit trees, 60 custard-apple trees, 500 guava trees... In 2019, with the advocacy of Commune Farmers' Association, Dung registered to join the local fruit growing group. Since joining the group, he and many members have been supported in tree care and training on transferring science and technology to fruit trees. In general, the plants are well adapted to the climate and soil of the land, so that his garden has grown well and initially achieves efficiency.
Tran Van Nam - Head of the fruit growing group in Van Hung Commune said that the group initially had only 5 members. Up to now, the group has admitted 8 new members specializing in gardening in Xuan Dong and Xuan Tay villages. The members of the group have the lowest fruit tree planting area of 0.5 ha, the highest 2 ha; mainly planting mangoes, green-skin grapefruits, guavas, jackfruits, dragon fruits, coconuts... Some members have brought specialty fruit trees in other places to test and grow effectively such as Tien Vua grapefruits (from Thanh Hoa), red flesh dragon fruit... The group holds quarterly activities for members to share the experience of taking care of fruit trees to be better. In addition, the group was supported by farmers' associations at all levels in fruit-growing techniques and capital to invest in production development. Currently, some orchards have begun to harvest.
According to Tran Ngoc Phu - Chairman of Van Hung Commune Farmers' Association, after 2 years of operation, the members have converted the previously inefficient productive land to fruit trees, actively combined and applied effectively scientific - technical progress and production experience to help plants grow better in Van Hung land. The commune Farmers' Association has supported a loan of 400 million VND from the Farmers Support Fund of the Central Association to help its members invest and develop production. In early 2021, the association organized a scientific and technical training in fruit growing according to VietGAP standards for its members.
