This year, jujube in Cam Thanh Nam Commune, Cam Ranh has a bumper crop thanks to nets to prevent yellow flies. However, the sales face many difficulties, especially when Cam Ranh implements social distancing under Directive 16.
Currently, the main jujube crop in Cam Thanh Nam Commune is entering the harvest. Ho Van Niem (Quang Hoa village) said that his family has been harvesting jujubes for more than half a month on an area of 4,000m2 firstly and the next 3,000m2. His jujube crop is good thanks to he has invested in nets of more than 100 million VND, preventing yellow flies and harmful insects.
Tran Van Quan's jujube orchard (in Quang Hoa village) has just been harvested. He said that using nets to prevent flies is very effective. However, as the weather is hot now, the net covering the jujube orchard has increased the heat, especially at noon, which may affect the flowering of the following crop.
According to Ngo Van Nhe - Chairman of Cam Thanh Nam Commune Farmers' Association, for the past few years, jujube cultivation has been difficult due to pests and diseases and the output for the product is not much, so the apple area is gradually narrowing. Currently, there are only more than 40 hectares, mainly in Quang Hoa village. The application of anti-yellow fly nets has brought high efficiency to jujubes. Currently, 90% of jujube orchards in the commune has been covered with nets. Some households have not been able to implement it due to lack of funds, while support funds from the association's channels for farmers are still limited.
Ho Tan Cuong - Director of Cam Thanh Nam Jujube Cooperative said that over the past time, the cooperative has made a lot of efforts in contacting businesses and network suppliers, even accepting deferred payments for farmers to invest in preventing flies from destroying jujubes. Therefore, the area of net application has increased significantly, bringing efficiency in increasing productivity and output. Jujube orchards invested in netting, care and good investment according to VietGAP standards have a yield of 60-70 tons/ha/crop. Currently, the consumption of jujubes has slowed down because the city is applying social distancing under Directive 16.
According to Le Minh Hai - Head of Economic Department of Cam Ranh City, in order to solve difficulties for cooperatives and jujube growers, the city has worked with the Provincial Cooperative Union on this issue. The Provincial Cooperative Union has submitted to the Provincial People's Committee to allow vehicles carrying jujubes to pass through the quarantine checkpoint when they comply with the quarantine requirements as prescribed.
