In recent years, the shortage of labor force to plant, care for and harvest sugar cane has become more and more serious. In that context, increasing the proportion of mechanization in the production stages, especially the harvesting stage, to overcome this situation is the top priority of Bien Hoa - Ninh Hoa One Member Sugar Company Limited (BHS-NH).
According to experienced sugarcane growers, it needs about 60 people cutting sugarcane in a day to harvest 1ha of sugarcane with a yield of about 60 tons of sugarcane. With the scarcity of labor, it is very difficult to hire tens or hundreds of workers to cut sugarcane, especially in large sugarcane areas, up to tens of hectares. A sugarcane cutting machine has capacity of hundreds of workers will help sugarcane growers solve the labor problem. Harvesting 1ha of sugarcane manually is 12 million VND while doing it by machine costs only about 10 million VND.
BHS-NH has invested in 2 sugarcane harvesting machines now with the capacity to harvest 400-500 ha/crop each. The company aims to have about 5 sugarcane harvesting machines, reaching the goal of bringing the rate of sugarcane harvesting by machines to 40% of the raw material area, partly solving difficulties in the harvesting.
According to Director of BHS-NH Nguyen Quoc Viet, to be able to harvest by machine, farmers can register in order that the company send professional staff to guide them sugarcane planting techniques.
In addition, BHS-NH also implemented solutions to increase sugarcane yield.
Nguyen Quoc Viet said, after more than 3 years of opening up for integration, Vietnam's sugar industry in general and BHS-NH in particular have faced many challenges. Mechanization to partly improving sugarcane productivity is one of the core solutions to bring sustainable profits for sugarcane. Along with favorable policies of the Government and the synchronous solutions, BHS-NH and farmers in raw material areas are confident for the upcoming successful sugarcane crops.
