Khanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee has just issued a plan to implement the Vietnam Fisheries Development Strategy to 2030, with a vision to 2045. In the coming time, the fishing industry will develop in a sustainable direction, becoming a industry producing and exporting goods in accordance with local realities.
Many advantages
In recent years, the fisheries sector has become one of the key economic sectors of the province with an average export turnover of 11.34% per year. In 2020, despite facing many difficulties due to the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic, the province's seafood output still reached more than 95,590 tons; seafood export turnover reached nearly 510 million USD. Particularly for the fishing industry, Khanh Hoa is identified as one of the major fishing centers of the country. Currently, the whole province has 3,385 fishing vessels with a length of 6m or more, 1,891 of which are fishing in coastal areas, 753 are fishing in coastal areas and 741 are operating in high seas. The fishing industry has advantages, bringing high economic efficiency to local fishermen. In the 2016-2020 period, the average annual fishing output of fishermen in the province will reach 96,000 tons.
According to Nguyen Trong Chanh - Director of the Sub-Department of Fisheries, at present, the fishing industry of the province has been organized and rearranged towards sustainable development. The force of fishing vessels exploiting the high seas has been equipped with fishing gear and a modern product preservation system, meeting food safety and hygiene standards. Fishery logistics facilities in the province are also interested in investment. Currently, the whole province has 4 fishing ports, 1 anchorage to avoid storms for fishing vessels to ensure local fishing activities; 4 facilities for building and repairing ships; many facilities provide oil, ice, buy seafood, repair fishing gear... provide logistics for fishing fleets inside and outside the province. A great advantage for the province's fishing industry is that the province has many seafood processing factories for export in the area. The province has up to 149 seafood processing establishments for domestic consumption and 57 seafood processing establishments for export, with many enterprises having built large and reputable brands. Sustainable development oriented
The goal is that by 2030, the proportion of the fisheries sector will account for 61-62% of the agricultural sector. The total production of aquatic products will reach 150-155 thousand tons. The value of seafood export turnover will reach 700-725 million USD, increasing by 5-6% per year on average. More than 80% of fishery workers are trained.
According to Nguyen Trong Chanh, in order to build and develop fishing sustainably, the Provincial People's Committee orients the development of the fishing to comply with the codes of responsible fisheries and fight against IUU fishing; continue to reorganize fishing activities in association with job change and livelihood development for fishermen; develop an efficient and sustainable fleet of fishing boats in the high seas; allocate fishing quotas in accordance with the reserve of aquatic resources… In addition, the province will attract businesses to invest in the fishing industry, especially large enterprises and corporations to send fleets of ships to the far sea, organize production according to the linkage chain; promote the application of science and technology to the exploitation and preservation of products to improve efficiency, reduce post-harvest losses as well as ensure the working conditions of fishermen...
To implement this plan, the Provincial People's Committee emphasized 6 groups of key solutions, including: Propaganda to raise awareness of the fishing community in order to develop a sustainable fishing industry; training and developing human resources; applying science and technology to production; organizing production; strengthening state management; mechanisms and policies to attract the development of the fisheries sector, including the fishing industry. Accordingly, the province will have financial and credit policies to attract investment in infrastructure development of the fisheries sector, effectively implement tax and fee incentives for activities in this field. In addition, the province will have policies to encourage all economic sectors, especially attracting foreign investors, ODA sources and private enterprises to invest in the field of fishing, logistics, seafood processing and export...
