Over the years, support for crop transformation is one of the important policies in restructuring the agriculture in Khanh Hoa province. In the period of 2021-2025, the province will continue to convert thousands of hectares of land of inefficient crops to planting trees of higher value.
According to the monitoring results of the Provincial Farmers' Association on the implementation of the Crop Conversion Project for the 2016-2020 period in the province, in the years from 2017 to 2020, the province has converted nearly 3,900ha of land for inefficient crops to crops of higher economic value. Accordingly, mixed gardens were boldly switched by farmers to fruit trees like mango, pomelo, jackfruit…; and the single-crop rice fields in areas with difficulty in irrigation or at high ground are converted to grow vegetables and beans.
In the process of crop changing, the State has supported infrastructure investment such as electricity, water... in order to facilitate farming process; supported about 50% of the cost of seeds, fertilizers... for farmers. According to the provincial Department of Agriculture and Rural Development, in the period 2017-2020, the province has more than 1,600 hectares of land to convert crops supported with a budget of more than 40 billion VND by the State.
According to Tran Thien Hung, Director of the Provincial Sub-Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection, in the period of 2017-2020, on average, farmers convert about 1,000 hectares of arable land each year, most of which is from mixed fields, ineffective perennial plants to fruit trees. After crop converting, it is remarkable that farmers not only improved their income but also significantly improved their production level.
In March 2021, the Provincial People's Committee approved the Plant Conversion Plan for the period of 2021-2025 in the province. Accordingly, in this period, the whole province is expected to convert more than 5,800ha of land for planting annual and perennial crops that are inefficient to new crops with higher economic efficiency. Ninh Hoa will have the largest converted area with more than 2,500ha; followed by Cam Lam with more than 1,000 hectares, including 717 hectares of perennial plants to be converted to fruit trees and the rest to annual crops and vegetable.
